Badlands by Jill Sorenson

Penny Sandoval isn't happy. Her father is running for President so her life has been thrust into the spotlight. He is ultra conservative so it doesn't help that she is an unwed mother. Five years again she had given birth at 18 during the earthquake that rocked San Diego. Now her parents and her have made up but Penny is still uncomfortable with the spotlight. And it doesn't help that she has the hots for her bodyguard.

Owen Jackson is a reformed convict. He first meet Penny during the earthquake and has wanted her ever since. But he feels he isn't good enough. During an event Penny and her son, Cruz, are kidnapped along with Owen. It turns out the kidnapper is Owen's brother, who has just been released from prison and owes some bad people a lot of money. They are demanding money and for Penny's father to withdraw from the race. They are taken to the Badlands and the Salton Sea.

Penny is able to to escape with Cruz. They make their way into the Badlands but now they won't last long. Owen is also able to escape and catch up with them. They are running for their lives from the elements and the bad guys. Will they be able to overcome all the obstacles?

I love the Aftershock series. It just keeps getting better and better. They are exciting and I love the characters! The next one is Backwoods.
